
The next time you find yourself with a cat staring affectionately at you from the sunbeam or observing a bird from the windowsill, think of the remarkable African cat ancestor that roams the savannah and semi-arid regions of Africa and the Near East for the past 10,000 years.
As the domesticated cat or Felis catus, it is the most successful animal species on the planet with a population of almost a billion. It has changed little from its African wildcat ancestor, Felis lybica, which is essential knowledge to understand the behavior of the feline ignoring you from the other side of the room.
Who Is Felis lybica?
The African Wildcat is a small cat that is native to Africa (excluding the Sahara and the dense rainforests of the Congo Basin), the Arabian Peninsula, and the Near East. As part of the Felis lineage (the youngest of the eight lineages of wild cats of the Felidae family), the African Wildcat diverged around 3.4 million years ago, leading to the evolution of the remaining small cats of the world, including the Sand Cat, the Black-footed Cat, and the domestic cat.
If you have ever spotted a photo of an African Wildcat and done a double-take at the animal, you are not alone in your surprise at how closely the wild cat resembles a domestic tabby cat. While the two share the same physical features characteristic of tabby cats (such as their sandy grey to tawny brown coat with striped markings, ringed tails of black colouring, and pale underbellies), there are some differences between the African Wildcat and domestic cats. For instance, wildcats have longer, more muscular legs, reddish-rust colouring on the backs of their ears, and a more robust and athletic body build to support their survival in the wild.
The Neolithic Bargain: How Cats Domesticated Themselves
Around 10,000 years ago, a transformation was taking place in what would become the cradle of civilization: the Fertile Crescent. The Neolithic Revolution would transform human beings from nomadic tribes to agricultural communities. Humans would begin to cultivate wheat and barley in the fields they created, build permanent settlements, and store their harvest. With grain comes rodents.
The African Wildcat noticed.
What followed was less a deliberate act of human domestication and more a process of mutual opportunism. Wildcats, attracted by the reliable food source of rodents around granaries, began to tolerate proximity to humans. Farmers, observing the cats' pest-control effectiveness, began to tolerate — and eventually encourage — their presence. Food scraps were left out. Cats edged closer. Over generations, the individuals least fearful of humans reproduced most successfully in this niche.
This is what scientists call the commensal pathway to domestication: the animal is not captured or selectively bred by humans, but instead adapts itself to human environments through natural selection. The cat, in a very real sense, chose us.
Geneticist Carlos Driscoll and his colleagues, in their landmark 2007 study, traced the mitochondrial DNA of domestic cats worldwide and identified at least five founding lineages — all tracing back to Felis lybica lybica populations in the Near East. The domestic cat is not descended from any other wildcat species. Of all the felids that could have crossed that threshold, only the African Wildcat did — and only in the Near East first, and then, separately, in Egypt.
Cyprus, Egypt, and the Spread West
The earliest direct evidence of a cat–human relationship comes from Cyprus. In 2004, archaeologists excavating the Neolithic site of Shillourokambos found a small grave containing a human skeleton and, just 40 centimetres away, the remains of a cat. The graves are estimated to be approximately 9,500 years old. Cyprus has no native wildcats, which means this cat was deliberately brought to the island — almost certainly by Neolithic farmers who valued it enough to carry it across the sea.
Several thousand years later, a second, independent wave of domestication took place in ancient Egypt, where cats were held in remarkable esteem. The goddess Bastet was depicted as a cat — or a woman with a cat's head — and killing a cat, even accidentally, was punishable by death. A cat skeleton discovered at an Egyptian site and dated to between 3,600 and 3,800 years ago shows evidence of healed fractures, suggesting an injured cat that was nursed back to health. This is a small, quiet detail that speaks volumes.
From Egypt, domestic cats began spreading across the Mediterranean. A 2025 study published in Science, analysing 87 ancient and modern cat genomes, found that domestic cats did not spread into Europe with Neolithic farmers as previously thought — instead, they appear to have arrived in Europe around 2,000 years ago, likely via North Africa, travelling with Roman traders and soldiers.
By the Middle Ages, the domestic cat had reached most of the known world — a global dispersal achieved through nothing more than being useful, and, eventually, beloved.
What Changed? The Genetics of Tameness
Given how closely domestic cats still resemble their African Wildcat ancestors — genetically, they remain extraordinarily similar, so much so that the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature only formally confirmed Felis catus as a separate species in 2003 — the question arises: what exactly did change?
The answer lies primarily in behaviour, encoded in specific regions of the genome. Studies comparing domestic cat DNA with that of wildcats have identified changes around genes associated with fear responses, memory, and the ability to learn in response to reward. Domestic cats are, in effect, a version of the African Wildcat in which the threshold for fear of humans has been substantially lowered and the capacity for positive association with them substantially raised.
They did not lose their predatory instincts — any cat owner watching their pet stalk a feather toy can confirm this. They did not lose their territoriality, their independence, or their fundamentally solitary nature. They simply became tolerant of humans, and over millennia, through selective breeding, attached to them.
The Wild Ancestor Today — and Why It Matters
While domestic cats have conquered the globe, the African Wildcat continues its far older, quieter life across Africa and the Near East. It is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List in terms of overall numbers — but it faces a significant and accelerating threat: hybridisation with domestic and feral cats.
Wherever domestic cats and African Wildcats share a range, they interbreed freely. The resulting hybrid offspring are fertile and can breed with either parent population. Over time, this genetic dilution erases the genetic distinctiveness of the wild species. In some regions, it is believed that genetically pure African Wildcats have become exceptionally rare outside protected areas. In South Africa, conservation programmes around Kruger National Park are actively working to reduce this hybridisation by sterilising feral and domestic cats near the park's borders.
There is a painful irony here: the wild ancestor of the domestic cat may itself be threatened by its own descendants.
From the Savannah to the Armchair — and Back Again
Next time your cat sits with that characteristic upright posture — back straight, front legs extended, head perfectly level — take a moment to look at ancient Egyptian bronze mummy cases and tomb paintings. You will see the exact same pose. The African Wildcat, with its long, upright legs, sat precisely that way; it is a posture that domestic cats have never entirely lost.
From the African savannah to the suburban sofa, cats have journeyed for 10,000 years to reach their current state of diversity. The selective breeding of cats began around 150 years ago, resulting in cats of every colour and type. Some breeds of cats exhibit the same behaviour and physical attributes as their wild ancestor - they are stocky, calm and confident in their own abilities to rule over their environment.
If you find yourself enamored with this unique quality, you might want to consider adding a British Blue kitten to your home. This breed was entirely bred in the United Kingdom in such a way that their coat is blue-grey, the color of the African wildcat’s sandy-grey coat. These cats have a calm and independent nature. They are loyal to their owners but maintain a regal bearing when they exhibit themselves in their homes. The British Blue is essentially a domesticated African wildcat.
The savannah is a long way from your armchair. However, it was the Felis lybica that allowed the cat to cross over continents and some part of those ancient cats still live within every cat that chooses to sit beside you.
