Abu Dhabi UAE: First Arabian Caracal Sighting in Al Ain in 35 years

The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi recorded the first sighting of an Arabian caracal (Caracal caracal schmitzi) in Al Ain’s Jebel Hafeet National Park in 35 years.

Remote cameras captured both day‑ and night‑time images of a male caracal as part of a long‑term wildlife monitoring programme.

Officials highlighted that the species, once considered possibly extinct in the wild in the UAE, has declined due to illegal hunting and habitat loss.

The rediscovery underscores the importance of preserving protected habitats and using advanced research tools to track threatened species.

Following the sighting, the agency plans to intensify monitoring to better understand the caracal’s population in the area.

South Africa: Cape Town's Isolated Caracal Population

Cape Town’s Urban Caracal Project warns that rapid urbanisation is isolating Cape Peninsula caracals and pushing them toward possible extinction.

GPS‑tracking data shows that some groups are so cut off from others that inbreeding, including sibling‑level mating, is already occurring.

With an estimated 50 caracals left in the region, researchers fear increased vulnerability to disease, reduced health, and lower survival rates.

The project is shifting its focus from expensive GPS collars to genetic studies aimed at assessing inbreeding severity and planning a potential genetic rescue by introducing caracals from healthier populations.

South Africa: Rat Poison Threat to Cape Town's Caracal Population

Urban rat poisons are contaminating Cape Town’s natural ecosystems, exposing predators such as caracals, otters, owls, genets, honey badgers, and mongooses to dangerous anticoagulant toxins.

A UCT research team found that 81% of sampled animals carried rat‑poison compounds, with caracals showing the highest exposure at 92%, largely through eating poisoned rodents.

The study highlights that exposure occurs across all ages and may even reach kittens through their mothers’ milk.

Researchers warn that widespread use of over‑the‑counter rodenticides, combined with urban expansion, is creating a significant biodiversity threat.

They call for better waste management, reduced poison use, and public engagement to protect Cape Town’s peri‑urban wildlife.

Writing on his Life Of Mike’s Facebook page:

I stumbled on the illusive (elusive??) Table Mountain Caracal this morning just as it made a dassie kill. After following it to it’s den, I placed a GoPro inside the little cave it calls home and managed to capture a mere glimpse of 55 minutes into the life of this beautiful and secretive creature.

South Africa: SPCA Rescues Caracal Found in Family Kitchen

A caracal startled a Durbanville family when it was discovered perched on top of their kitchen cupboards.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA managed to capture the distressed and defensive cat despite its hissing and spitting.

After an overnight stay at the SPCA’s Wildlife Centre confirmed it was unharmed, the caracal was released safely into the Tygerberg Nature Reserve.

Conservation officials noted that such encounters are rare within city limits, as caracals are typically cautious of humans, though they can pose risks to pets if cornered.
