A Striped Beginning: History of Global Tiger Day

Global Tiger Day was born at the First International Tiger Forum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on November 23, 2010. Thirteen “Tiger Range Countries” – Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Russian Federation, Thailand and Vietnam – gathered to confront the stark reality: wild tiger (Panthera tigris) numbers had plummeted from an estimated 100,000 a century ago to fewer than 3,500 by 2010. At the Summit, participants adopted the St. Petersburg Declaration on Tiger Conservation, pledging to “double the number of wild tigers by 2022” under the banner TX2, and created the Global Tiger Recovery Program to coordinate funding, law-enforcement, habitat protection and monitoring efforts across borders (en.wikipedia.org, earthreminder.com).

Who Originated It?

While the Tiger Summit was convened by the Russian government under President Vladimir Putin, it was truly a multilateral launch: WWF, the Global Tiger Forum and the World Bank played instrumental roles alongside national agencies. Vladimir Putin himself signed laws imposing tougher penalties for poaching and illegal tiger trade, and spearheaded creation of the Amur Tiger Centre under the Russian Geographical Society (en.wikipedia.org).

Where It’s Celebrated

Since 2011, July 29th has been marked in every tiger-range country – from Nepal’s Chitwan workshops to India’s Project Tiger commemorations – and beyond. Non-range nations like the United Kingdom, United States and South Africa hold gallery exhibitions, zoo events and school activities to raise awareness and funds. Virtual campaigns, celebrity endorsements and “Orange Your World” social media drives ensure Global Tiger Day resonates on every continent (tigers.panda.org).

Today’s Tigers: Status and Success Stories

Conservation efforts since 2010 have delivered historically unprecedented gains:

  • Global wild tiger estimate: According to the Global Tiger Forum’s latest analysis, there are now roughly 5,574 wild tigers across Asia – a 74% increase since 2010 (worldwildlife.org).

  • India leads the charge: India’s 5th Tiger Census (2022) counted 3,682 tigers in the wild – more than double the 1,706 recorded in 2010 – thanks to strengthened protected-area networks and community-based initiatives (hindustantimes.com).

  • Doubling success: A study by India’s National Tiger Conservation Authority highlights how targeted anti-poaching patrols, habitat restoration and prey-base management have powered this recovery, lifting the global conservation story into the realm of “rare, exciting achievements” (apnews.com).

These triumphs underscore a central truth: strong policy, science-backed fieldwork and community engagement work. Every tiger cub spotted on a camera trap, every rescue of a poached animal, and every hectare of restored forest reflects a collective commitment to TX2 and beyond.

Conservation Milestones to Celebrate

  • Project Tiger (India, 1973): The world’s first national tiger conservation program, now spanning 53 reserves.

  • Global Tiger Recovery Program (2011): A multilateral blueprint endorsed by the St. Petersburg Declaration, now in its 2.0 phase.

  • Global Tiger Forum: A platform unifying governments and NGOs across 13 range states.

  • 21st Century Tiger: A UK-based funder distributing over £2 million to 70+ on-the-ground projects in seven countries.

  • Panthera’s Tiger Program: Pioneering scientific monitoring and habitat corridor initiatives.

  • TRAFFIC & IUCN: Leading anti-trafficking networks and Red List assessments that keep the global community informed and reactive.
