The Panthera genus is one of the most well-known groups of animals and includes what many call the “big cats.” Within the wild cat family Felidae, the Panthera species are among the largest living cats and there are only one or two species per continent. The five species are the tigers and snow leopards of Asia; the lions and leopards of Africa and Asia; and the jaguars of Latin America.

Panthera Cats Geographic Distribution
The five big cats occur across the globe from South America, across Africa and into the far reaches of Russia. The tiger is native to Asia, with historic range spanning from Eastern Russia through Southeast Asian forests, though its territory has shrunk dramatically. The snow leopard occupies high mountain ranges in Central and South Asia, such as the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau.
The lion now occurs naturally only in Sub-Saharan Africa and a small population in India (the Asiatic lion). The leopard has the widest natural range in Africa and across parts of the Middle East and Asia, displaying extraordinary adaptability to different habitats.
The jaguar is unique among Panthera species as the sole member native to the Americas, from Mexico through South America.
